The Division of Student Affairs creates communities that provide a sense of belonging and engages students to be successful. To achieve this mission, Student Affairs provides outstanding programs and services for students in the following departments: Campus Store, Counseling Services, Dining Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Health Services, Judicial Affairs, Parking, Post Office, Recreational Sports, Residential Living & Learning, Rodeo Activities, Student Engagement, Student Life Studies, Student Publications, Texan Card, Transitions and Family Relations, University Police, and Student Government Association.

Campus Store

As students begin their college adventure, a campus store is needed that will have the right stuff at the right time and place:  The Tarleton Campus Store located inside the Thompson Student Center.  Our team of experts ensures that we have the course materials and supplies necessary to succeed and can assist with any questions or concerns.  We offer a number of textbook formats to suit each student's unique situation. Conferencing and Event Services

Conferencing and Event Services provides assistance to external constituents who wish to utilize university facilities and services for conferences, meetings, and events. In addition, guidance is provided to university departments, faculty, and staff who are planning large-scale events on the Tarleton campus. Each summer the office coordinates approximately 50 internally and externally hosted summer camps.

Dining Services

Dining Services is committed to serving tasty, nutritious food at reasonable prices. The University Dining Hall offers a variety of menu items, many of which are prepared on the spot at student request. Food is prepared, presented, and enjoyed in a relaxing atmosphere where the students can eat, visit with fellow students, faculty and staff, and experience one of Tarleton’s hallmarks: the friendliness and warmth of its campus culture.

The Texan Star Food Court in the Thompson Student Center offers additional fast food options. Students, faculty, staff, and the general public can purchase coffee, hot chocolate, other specialty drinks, and snacks at Suave Cafe’, a coffee and espresso bar in the Library Learning Commons. Post Office

The Tarleton Post Office is dedicated to providing the very best mail service to our students, faculty, and staff.  The post office is a fully functional USPS station offering all USPS services except cashing money orders.  Even though we are a contract postal unit we also receive parcels from UPS, FedEx, and DHL for delivery.

The Tarleton Post Office is open from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, except for the University holidays.  Our window service includes sales of stamps, money orders, mail box rentals, mailing of packages, express, priority, certified, insured, and registered mail.

The mail center provides delivery to 4700 mail boxes located in the Thompson Center and the residential hall. Delivery is made to 100 departmental mailbox locations twice daily.

Campus Recreation

Campus Recreation provides a variety of recreational activities and events to meet the physical fitness and/or personal enjoyment needs of students, retirees, faculty/staff and spouses. Extracurricular opportunities are coordinated and implemented to provide intramural team and individual sports, self-directed activities, and special events.

The Recreation Sports Center is a 70,000 square foot facility, housing a weight room, climbing wall, four racquetball courts, men’s and women’s locker rooms, outdoor pursuits equipment check-out, three basketball/volleyball courts, three badminton courts, archery range, and two classrooms. The second floor includes two group exercise rooms, track-side cardio, cardio theater, three-lane track, and the administrative office suite.

The Vance Terrell Intramural Complex is equipped with multiple all-purpose fields to serve various organized and open recreational activities. Intramural Sports programs played at this facility include flag football, soccer, and softball.

Fitness/Wellness programming is available to meet the fitness and wellness needs of Recreation Sports Center members. Examples of wellness includes Group Ex classes, weight room and cardio areas of the facility, personal training services, and wellness workshops.

Tarleton Challenge is an energizing ropes course learning experience. By combining high and low elements, participants enjoy safe, fun, unique and innovative opportunities to promote group and personal growth and team-building, as well as communication and trust.

Residential Living & Learning

Residential Living & Learning transforms students through a community experience that promotes intentional connections to peers, faculty, staff, university resources and invaluable learning experiences.

Tarleton State University offers more than 15 residential facilities that provide a rich mix of room designs and price points to meet the needs of our diverse student body. Each residence hall offers a unique and comfortable environment for students. Residence Hall rooms are equipped with furniture, cable TV, and Internet/WiFi as well as a combination refrigerator/freezer with a microwave unit. Laundry facilities are offered in each residential environment. Residential facility staff is available to provide students with the assistance needed to succeed socially and academically.

The University requires all students residing on campus in a traditional residence hall and all students classified as a first year student (regardless of assignment) to purchase a minimum ten (10) meal plan. Visit  for specific information regarding meal plans options.

On-Campus Housing Requirement

Residing on campus creates an environment where students experience more success; therefore, Tarleton supports an on-campus living requirement of:

    Two (2) academic years for:

  • all “First Time Freshman” students who are under 21 years of age, prior to the start of the first registered semester,
  • all “Transfer” students who are under 21 years of age with less than 12 (twelve) credit hours excluding dual credit hours, prior to the start of the first registered semester

One (1) academic year for:

  • all “Transfer” students who are under 21 years of age with 12 (twelve) credit hours or more excluding dual credit hours, prior to the start of the first registered semester

Students who meet the requirements within an Academic Year Housing Contract will be required to fulfill the applicable contract and eat in the University dining facilities when assigned in a residence hall environment. Housing contracts are for an academic year (fall and spring).
Students may file for an exemption to this requirement for the following reasons:

  • Living with a parent at their legal, full-time residence within 45 miles of campus 
  • Living with a sibling who is a registered Tarleton student at their legal, full-time residence within 45 miles of campus 
  • Married or have a dependent child 
  • Medical reasons 

It is recommended that students not arrange to live off campus until their request for exemption has been approved through Residential Living & Learning. Housing Application

Housing application information is available online at: Students may complete their housing application through their "student" tab found after logging in through "My Gateway."  A $100 non-refundable application fee must be submitted with all applications. Applications are processed for assignment in order of the date they are completed. A housing application is not complete until the deposit has been submitted and the student has been admitted to the university. Living-Learning Communities

A Living-Learning Community is a smaller cohort of students (approximately 30 students) pursuing a common academic purpose and experience. Living-Learning Community students will be assigned together in a cluster of rooms in a specific residential area and will be enrolled in a pair/set of major specific courses required for their field of study. Participation in this program allows students to be part of a group living together in community and enrolled in one (1) or more courses together. Some opportunities exist for students to participate in Living-Learning Communities designed around an applied learning experience such as service or sustainability. These students live together in a residence hall and commit to fulfilling the requirements identified for the learning experience outside of the classroom. Students benefit from the relationships established among their peers, faculty and staff associated with each Living-Learning Community and typically experience increased levels of academic success. Students interested in our Living-Learning Community programs can indicate their interest through their Housing Application/Contract. Students will be evaluated for eligibility and, if eligible, assigned to an appropriate Living-Learning Community based on space availability. Meningitis Vaccine

Texas Legislative Bill 4189 requires each student assigned to live on-campus provide proof of a meningitis vaccine obtained no less than 10 days prior to moving into the on-campus environment. For more details about this requirement, go to: or call (254) 968-9124.

Rodeo Activities

The Office of Rodeo Activities provides students the opportunity to be active in rodeo activities on campus and at the intercollegiate level. Tarleton State University is a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) and competes in the Southwest Region. The Tarleton Rodeo Association provides students with the opportunity to plan and/or participate in events such as the Intramural Rodeo, the NIRA Rodeo, youth rodeos and various other jackpot events. The Office of Rodeo Activities provides some stock for practice and skill development at the Rodeo Practice Arena adjacent to the Agriculture Center. Student Engagement

While academic success is the highest priority, participation in the Student Engagement Activities experiences can add an important dimension to the college experience. Through student organizations, co-curricular activities, service learning opportunities, and volunteering, students learn to exercise citizenship, social responsibility and ethical leadership.

Student Organizations

Student organizations provide opportunities for development in the areas of leadership, personal management, collaboration, supervision, organization, communication, networking, event planning, and relationship development. School Wide Activities Team (SWAT)

The School Wide Activities Team (SWAT) is the university's official programming board that provides a variety of programs and activities for the university campus and surrounding communities. Students learn leadership and interpersonal skills by planning and implementing educational cultural, recreational, and entertainment programs.

Tarleton Leadership Programs

Tarleton Leadership Programs intend to instill the university core values into students. Through programs and organizations students will gain experience and receive guidance to foster growth, development, and help create students leaders that become community leaders. Tarleton Leadership Programs host Tarleton Round Up, an annual Tarleton Day of Service and advise student leadership organizations like Tarleton Serves. Students also have opportunities for leadership training and professional development through events such as Leadership Conference and Tarleton Leadership Institute. Lastly, the Department of Student Engagement strongly encourages students to take the StrengthsQuest Assessment to learn their top 5 strengths and learn how to apply and relate these strengths through their college career into professionalism.

Fraternity & Sorority Life

Fraternity and Sorority Life at Tarleton provides opportunities for brotherhood/sisterhood, scholarship, leadership and service. Groups range from social to social/professional and offer numerous activities that include community engagement, philanthropy events and social activities. The variety of fraternities and sororities on campus allow students the opportunity to select one that will best fit their needs. Thompson Student Center

The Thompson Student Center provides programs, services, and facilities that are responsive to needs of students, faculty, staff and local community. As the center of university community life, it serves as an arena for students to apply their educational experiences outside the classroom.

The 103,000 square foot facility features four meeting rooms, three ballrooms, a student printing service, gaming area, several campus life departments, the campus bookstore, food court, post office, and individual and group study areas. For more information go to: or call (254) 968-9256.

Student Counseling Services

Student Counseling Services provides counseling services to students enrolled on the Stephenville campus at Tarleton. The mission of Student Counseling Services is to provide exemplary services to as many students as possible with the express purpose of transforming student lives.  We promote wellness by assisting students from all backgrounds to accomplish their academic, career, and personal developmental goals.  The student health fee covers counseling services, so students are not charged any additional fees.  We offer individual, couples, pre-marital, family, and group counseling, along with consultation services. The SCS also provides preventative educational outreach programs to organizations across the campus. Presentations include topics such as stress management, test anxiety, relationship issues, positive body image, drug and alcohol use, and other topics as requested. Student Government Association

The Student Government Association is the representative voice of Tarleton students and it is directly responsible for bringing the interests and concerns of students to the attention of the administration and university community. Student Health Services

Student Health Services provides health care services to students enrolled on the Stephenville campus. The student health fee covers office visits. Reasonable fees are charged for treatment, injections, tests and medications. Identification Card presentation is required with each visit.

Services provided include: prescription and over-the counter medications, treatment of minor/acute illnesses and injuries, suturing of simple lacerations, removal of simple skin lesions, services of a medical doctor or nurse practitioner, administration of allergy injections as directed by the student’s allergist, consultations regarding any health problems (including referrals), blood pressure checks and the continuation of health care following surgery or illness as directed by a physician.

Students who have graduated from a public school in Texas should have current immunization status. The State of Texas requires students who will be living on campus for the first time show proof of vaccination against Bacterial Meningitis. The vaccination for Bacterial Meningitis must be received at least 10 days prior to moving on campus. Tuberculosis (TB) testing, tetanus, meningitis, influenza (fall semester only), and hepatitis A&B vaccines are available at the Student Health Center. Physical exams and women’s health exams and birth control are also available for a reasonable fee. Health literature is available for personal and educational purposes.

All x-rays, laboratory tests, and medical services conducted outside of the Student Health Center are performed at the student’s expense. Student Health Services is an advocate for the physically disabled. Student Judicial Affairs

The Office of Student Judicial Affairs staff is dedicated to promoting a campus environment of responsibility, respect, integrity and community through the enforcement of the Code of Student Conduct. The staff provides resolutions for both alleged academic and non-academic misconduct by students. The established standard of behavior is set forth in the Student Rules and under the Code of Student Conduct. In addition, the office assist students through notifying their professors, when they are out for 4 – 5 consecutive class days or 2-weeks for illness. A notification is sent, if it involves the student or an immediate family member (mother/father, sibling, child, grandparent, and step depending on family dynamics). Student Publications

The department of Student Publications oversees the production of the official campus newspaper and the official yearbook for Tarleton State University. The department is also charged with managing all marketing and communication efforts for the Division of Student Affairs. All publications and marketing projects are conceptualized, developed, and produced by staffs comprised of Tarleton students. The Grassburr

The Grassburr, first published in 1916, is the official student yearbook and is a permanent record of class, club, campus, athletic, and other events. The cost of the book is incorporated into the University Service Fee and therefore is available for all undergraduate students. Yearbooks can be mailed to graduated seniors each year for a minimal shipping charge. The Grassburr offers paid editor and contributor positions to any student interested in growing knowledge in communication, writing, editing, photography, and graphic design.

Student Affairs Marketing

Student Affairs Marketing manages all marketing and communication efforts for the Division of Student Affairs. This includes print publications, graphic design, social media, video production, photography, and website maintenance. This area relies heavily on student created work and offers various paid employment, internship and Applied Learning Experience opportunities for students in multiple academic fields.

Texan Card Office

The Texan Card Office provides students, faculty and staff with Texan Cards that are used as the official ID of the university.  The Texan Card allows access to buildings, meal plans, activities and services throughout the university and in the community.  Texan Bucks are also administered through this office.  For more information go to:

Texan Registration Days
  • Texan Registration Day is designed to introduce students to their academic discipline. Students and families will have an opportunity to interact with Tarleton’s faculty, staff and administrators, become better acquainted with students in their graduating class, as well as with currently enrolled students. Students enroll in their first semester courses and familiarize themselves with the academic advising process. A Parent/Family Orientation runs parallel to the student’s orientation. Parents/Families are informed on topics such as how to finance their students’ college education, navigate housing assignments, support their student’s transition into this new educational phase.
Duck Camp & Texan Camp Orientation
  • This three-day program is designed to be an introduction to building relationships and traditions for incoming new students. Student participation is voluntary and the event is held off-campus. The programs are facilitated by current Tarleton students and staff and/or faculty in small group sessions. Texan Camp is provided parallel to the last Duck Camp for new Transfer students hosted by Transfer Student Leaders of Tarleton. By the end of camp, students will have been exposed not only to the traditions of the University and the Core Values, while building strong relationships with their incoming classmates and student leaders.
Texan Transition Week
  • Transition Week is a one-week program designed to give new students a smooth transition into Tarleton State University both academically and socially. Students are enrolled in an introductory First-Year Seminar Class facilitated by Tarleton professors. They also receive out-of-class opportunities to explore their new environment and to become better equipped with knowledge of resources and services available which will impact their success.
Texan Connection (Spring)
  • A one-day program designed to prepare new first time students and transfer students entering second semester. Students are exposed to resources and services unique to Tarleton’s campus and students entering university lifestyle for the first time
Off-Campus and On-Line Orientation
  • Tarleton State University outreach sites provide an effective and appropriate orientation to commuter populations (Southwest Metroplex in Fort Worth, Waco Outreach Programs in Waco, Midlothian Outreach Programs in Midlothian and the E-Campus online). Tarleton’s on-line Orientation is designed to accommodate the needs of students who are unavailable for Texan summer orientations.

University Police and Parking Department

The safety and security of the campus community is the number one priority of the University Police Department. Staffed by fully licensed police officers, the department operates around the clock and every day to ensure a positive environment for students to live, learn and interact. Additionally, the department offers safety escorts across campus vehicle jump-starts for dead batteries and will unlock your car if your keys are locked inside. The employees of the University Parking Department work diligently to serve the campus in the area of parking and information. All vehicles which park on the university property must be registered with the department and have an appropriately displayed permit.
