Public and Applied Humanities Courses
PAHM 6086. Independent Study in Public and Applied Humanities. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
Specific topic and contents of the course will be determined by the student in consultation with the instructor, with whom the student meets regularly for supervision of the study. May be repeated to a maximum of six semester hours.
PAHM 6088. Dissertation in Public and Applied Humanities. 1-9 Credit Hours (Lecture: 1-9 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
Scheduled when the student is ready to begin the thorough and scholarly investigation of a topic approved by the dissertation committee. The dissertation must provide evidence that the candidate has pursued a coherent program of research related to the student’s area(s) of academic specialization, the results of which reveal academic excellence and which make an original contribution to the discipline. Graded on a satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U) basis. Course may be repeated as necessary, but credit will not be awarded for more than 9 credit hours. Prerequisite: Doctoral Standing and successful completion of the doctoral qualifying examination.
PAHM 6300. Public and Applied Humanities. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This survey course introduces students to the intersections of the humanities with various methods of public, private, or civic-oriented engagement.
PAHM 6302. The Art of Communication in the Public and Private Sectors. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This course examines written, oral, and visual communication practices through the systematic investigation of the way in which information is delivered to multiple audiences and across varied public and professional settings.
PAHM 6304. Applied Ethics in the Public and Private Sectors. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This course considers the practical application of ethical principles across various contexts, providing students with the tools to navigate complex ethical challenges in real-world scenarios. Topics may include the sciences, business, government, employment, or others.
PAHM 6306. Exploring Primary Sources. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This course considers the practical application of research through the use of primary source materials to generate knowledge about human experience. Primary source materials may include but are not limited to historical documents, artifacts, literary texts, and visual materials. This course equips students with an understanding of advanced research methodologies needed to complete the dissertation.
PAHM 6308. Peoples and Cultures. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This course provides a broad examination of human societies, cultures, traditions, and social structures necessary to work with cultural groups encountered in public and applied humanities.
PAHM 6310. Capstone - Application of the Humanities. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
This course serves as a bridge between coursework and the initiation of a student’s dissertation research and writing. This capstone course focuses on refining research questions and methodologies explored in the five core methods courses as students refine their dissertation topic and form the dissertation committee.
PAHM 6384. Internship in Public and Applied Humanities. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
Supervised professional activities during which principles and theories of public and/or applied humanities are employed. Includes presentations, evaluation, and conferences.
PAHM 6390. Special Topics in Public and Applied Humanities. 3 Credit Hours (Lecture: 3 Hours, Lab: 0 Hours).
Study of selected topic(s) directly related to the public and/or applied humanities. May be repeated for credit as topic varies. This course may be repeated for a maximum credit of up to six hours.
